"I’ve been training at Team Kuma Jiu Jitsu Academy for about 3 months and have had a wonderful experience thus far. The facility is clean and well maintained, the students are friendly and supportive, and the rolls are competitive. The class times are also more accommodating for people who are on a later schedule. More importantly, Coach Amir is a great instructor with a thorough understanding of modern BJJ. He is a “bigger” guy, but is also agile and dexterous, and his style of jiu jitsu is reflective of these attributes. For example, he knows how to apply a proper smash pass while also having a very formidable open guard. As such, I feel that Coach Amir can effectively tailor his instruction for practitioners of varying body types and skill level (you can check out technique videos on the Team Kuma YouTube channel to get a feel for Coach Amir’s teaching style). The current curriculum at Kuma offers a variety of classes suited for students of all skill levels. The Intro classes focus on the fundamentals of BJJ, while the All Level classes focus on more advanced techniques. They are usually taught in “units” over the course of a couple/few weeks. The Sunday class explores techniques outside the current unit and doubles as a Competition class. Finally, there is basically a sparring session or open mat after every class (no pressure to roll/participate, just available if need be). As a final note, the academy is very welcoming to drop-ins. We often get students visiting from out of town, which is nice because this gives current students the opportunity to roll with a variety of new training partners. I highly recommend Team Kuma Jiu Jitsu Academy and will continue to train here for the foreseeable future."
