"Overall good service and help raised grades, testing, and comprehension skill. My child went from 3 grade levels behind to her grade level in the 8 months she was with sylvan. The only complaint is sometimes they don't answer the phone. Once I sent my child without her cell phone and I had no way of contacting the people she was in the center with directly. When I called the number they couldn't get a hold of the center. I would like to be able to call this center directly especially if my child is inside"

"BUYER BEWARE!! Our personal experience is this location doesn’t care about earning new business. Today marks more than a week since we made the payment for the assessment test and our child took the test. I have called Sylvan, which seems to be a call-center (super nice people there) several times they’ve tried to reach out the center Director, but can never reach her, And they have left notes for her to call me back. So far haven’t heard a thing and honestly this seems like a reflection of how they operate. If this is how they’re going to treat me as a prospective customer before earning my business, I wonder how bad it can be once I am a customer. Rather go to the dentist or a car dealership, at least I won’t hear crickets there."

"**UPDATE: Lovely response below. Don't worry if our service is subpar. We only make you pay 40 to 50 dollars an hour twice a week for a month while your child continues to suffer. Oh and if you can't afford two tutoring services at the same time, just wait until youre done paying for the one you aren't using before you can get your child they help they need. Awesome business model Sylvan.** Maybe this location is under new management. I've read all the reviews here and I cannot attest to any of the quality services that people before me have stated in their reviews, but they all seem fairly old. I have used Sylvan twice now for the same child. Once years ago at the Round Lake location with FABULOUS returns. In only two months my son was on honor roll. I have been with the Gurnee location for close to the same amount of time and my son has only mastered five skills in over 15 visits. I have had appointments canceled because there wasn't a tutor for his scheduled time, I have had tutors show up 10 minutes late to teach, I have had tutors release him 10 minutes before his session was over, I have heard tutors be impatient and rude to him, the learning environment is a single room with children of all ages receiving different instructions (very distracting). You know what hasn't been missing...the speed at which they take their full payment. When I finally decided that I was wasting my son's time, and he was just getting further behind, I tried to cancel my service. The first phone call I received was, you need to cancel a month in advance and I was going to be charged for the entire month regardless, a total near $550 dollars. When I called back, the Admin that always seems inept didn't know I was paying hourly and didn't even have a contract for monthly service! I truly hope everyone enrolled is receiving better service than me, and your children are making strides to becoming academically successful, but I will NEVER in good conscious recommend this place to anyone. If you are searching for a tutor, please continue searching."

"Sylvan Learning Center helped my daughter excel in her Algebra class. She finished the year an A student in math thanks to Sylvan. The tutor was instrumental breaking down math concepts for my child to understand but also have the ability to decipher these concepts for herself. Now heading into high school she placed into Algebra 2 Honors class. Choosing Sylvan was the best decision I made for my child's academic learning."
