RockStar Martial Arts - Prosper

"I am a mom of two small boys who love getting physical and "wrestling." I often joked with friends when my first was just a few months old that it would have been more helpful to have taken wrestling prior to having kids, then the various newborn classes. After I had my second it became painfully evident that I needed to get ahead of this "massacre mommy" game. I ended up looking for martial arts classes near me and landed here training Jiu Jitsu. It has given me more than I could have imagined. Don't get me wrong there's a steep learning curve. I was taught my whole life to keep your hands to yourself, to mind your business, to work to keep the peace, and here I am practicing a very physical form of self defense. It took a long time for my mind to get past all that and not to constantly apologize. It also took a long time to get past the invasion of personal space that came along with this sport, and the huge turn off of having that personal space invaded by sweaty humans. That said, it has been the mental and physical challenge I needed after having kids. While this is most certainly an individual sport, there is a team spirit as you train with others, which I really appreciate. All the coaches here are top notch. They are patient, explain things through well, and correct your technique as you practice. That said, the upper belts are also coaching you along showing great patience as I flop around like a fish out of water. So far everyone I've met have shown great restraint. I've never felt in danger even though just about everyone I roll with is capable of a lot of damage, and so many of them are bigger and stronger. While BJJ is not something I would have ever imagined myself doing, I am so glad I had a reason to start learning this sport, and I am even more thankful to have ended up here. This is not only fun, but a great life skill to have, and I hope to continue practicing into my sixties and beyond."
