"Five years ago, I got the scare of a life time; a cancer diagnosis. I was blessed to have a wonderful surgeon assigned to me, Dr. Aaron Schwaab. As part of the process, I was told I would need to meet with a radiation oncologist. And I was twice blessed, because that person was Dr. Bugno. I was terrified of the unknown, as we all are when told to meet yet another doctor whom I did not know, and have to entrust my life to...scary stuff! During our first meeting, I had several questions, and wasn't interested in hearing the "medicalese" some doctors like to put their patients through. And as it turned out, Dr. Bugno was not one of those doctors who talks AT his patients. He spent FOUR HOURS talking to me during that initial consultation. The Sage cancer center closed, and we were still talking! Dr. Bugno was not going to allow me to leave until he assauged all of my fears. My phone rang during our visit, and he heard my ring tone--the Chicago Bears fight song. We shared a common interest, and he was further humanized for me. Although my situation became such that radiation was no longer a need or option, my overall health worsened and I was in the hospital on several more occasions. I was in the midst of reconstruction surgeries, on one occasion, and hospitalized for something unrelated. I bumped into Dr. Bugno while I was pacing the halls and we chatted a bit. He was on his way to another patient, but made a point to come back to me after that, just to (again) set my mind at ease, because he sensed something was amiss. (I never trusted the plastic surgeon). And on two other occasions, the same thing happened, where I was hospitalized, and bumped into Dr. Bugno, and each time --while I am sure he couldn't really place me, he recognized my face and made sure to converse with me. Dr. Bugno showed me kindness and patience and caring at times when he was not being paid to do so. He gave freely of his time, and his informative talk about Cancer's "million billionth" was not lost on me. I will remember his many kindnesses always. And I will be eternally grateful for his compassion and empathy when I was terrified about my (possible) non-existent future. I highly recommend this doctor."
