"Maybe don't cancel appointments on people twice if they're waiting to see you for something rather serious. Once is understandable, but twice is not."

"I was disappointed with my recent appointment due to issues that seem to indicate a lack of thoroughness and attentiveness on the doctor's part. While I provided a detailed medical history noting my eating disorder and recent test results, it seemed this information was not fully reviewed or considered prior to my exam. No physical exam was performed besides a quick Pap smear. Rather than exploring the root causes of my pelvic pain or discussing a comprehensive treatment plan, the sole recommendation provided was unsupervised weight loss - an approach understandably concerning given my history. While weight may impact some conditions, a one-size-fits-all prescription without full vetting seems an incomplete approach. Overall, the experience left me feeling my needs were not adequately addressed. As someone currently experiencing a tremendous amount of pelvic pain, I was hoping for a thorough evaluation, compassionate care, and to feel that my full situation was understood. However, due to the lack of physical exam or review of my medical history, combined with feeling pathologized during the appointment, it was difficult for me to properly communicate all of my needs and concerns while in such physical and emotional discomfort. A more empathetic approach that validated my distress and eased any worries about bringing issues to light may have led to a better discussion where I felt able to openly share details and jointly decide on the best treatment path. Going forward, taking extra time to build rapport with patients in pain could help put them more at ease to openly share details and jointly decide on the best treatment path. When folks feel their distress is validated, it cultivates the trust needed for truly informed consent and decision making about their own care."
