About the Business

Winter Wimbeley house

Winter Wimberley House is a historic institution located at 14068 Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley, Texas, United States. Originally built as a trading post settlement near Cypress Creek in 1848, the institution has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The house was initially known as "Winters' Mill" after William Carvin Winters built a gristmill on the site in 1856. Over the years, the mill expanded to process various goods such as lumber, shingles, flour, molasses, and cotton, becoming a key economic anchor for the community.

The Winters-Wimberley House, the village's oldest documented stone house, has survived the test of time and now serves as the Wimberley Valley Museum. The house was home to several generations of millers, including Pleasant Wimberley, whose successful management of the mill lasted over 20 years. The house is built of thick ashlar limestone blocks and features a simple yet substantial design.

In 1997, the descendants of Pleasant Wimberley sold the house and surrounding five acres for community use. The house underwent restoration efforts led by Jeffrey H. Kester & Associates in 1998, with funding from the National Trust. The institution was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and has since become a significant landmark in Wimberley.

Winter Wimberley House is a testament to the rich history of the region, showcasing the pioneering spirit of early settlers like William Carvin Winters and Pleasant Wimberley. Visitors can explore the house and learn about the legacy of the Wimberley family, who played a crucial role in shaping the community's development. With its historical significance and cultural heritage, Winter Wimberley House stands as a symbol of the enduring legacy of the Wimberley family and their contributions to the region's history.
