About the Business

Casa de Azucar

Casa de Azucar, located at 4301 Leavell Avenue in El Paso, Texas, is a unique tourist attraction that showcases the incredible craftsmanship of Rufino Loya. Known as the Sugar House, this charming institution features intricate cement decorations that Loya spent over 25 years creating with precision and dedication.

Inspired by the Catholic churches of his native Mexico, Loya's designs often feature religious themes, as well as motifs from nature such as flowers, leaves, and pineapples symbolizing hospitality. One of the highlights of Casa de Azucar is a stunning altarpiece that took over 300 hours to create.

Visitors to Casa de Azucar can admire the beautiful artwork that adorns the house, including a piece created for the 350th anniversary of El Paso. Loya's attention to detail and dedication to his craft are evident in every corner of the compound.

Those who visit Casa de Azucar may even have the opportunity to meet Rufino Loya himself, who is sometimes present to explain the significance of each section of his labor of love. Don't miss the chance to explore this hidden gem in El Paso and experience the world of Casa de Azucar.

"This beautiful home was created by Mexican immigrant Rufino Loya Revis from 1973 until he passed in 2022. He worked for Levi Strauss and could not afford a palace for his wife so he purchased the squat modest "horrible" home and promised to create a place worthy of his love. Boy did he!! He taught himself all the skills necessary, worked tirelessly and created a masterpiece. In his works he wanted to honor his homeland of Mexico, his new home of El Paso and his love for the Lord. His designs, creations, colors and creativity are all displayed in a modest neighborhood of small houses on a corner lot that is visible from the highway. If you are ever in the El Paso area this is a must see before it's gone. The creator, master, artist and devoted husband passed away in August 2022 and the future is uncertain for Casa de Azucar."

"It is a house just beside a road. Can do a parallel parking because there is no specific parking spot. When I was there it’s closed so took a quick spot to take some pictures and videos. It’s definitely beautiful and close to downtown. I recommend visiting this place."

"What a cool little house! I think the artist has built all this for his wife. What an amazing gift that has been a work in progress for decades!"

"This place spells dedication. Lots and lots of time and patience to make this place beautiful. Its a private home. We parked outside and took pictures. Just be mindful of the dog of the neighbor in the opposite side. Kind of big.."
