Hanger Clinic: Prosthetics & Orthotics

"My son was initially referred to Hanger Clinic at age 7, in order to get AFOs and night splints to help him with the accumulating effects of increasing toe walking and an accelerating loss of range-of-motion. I had no idea what to expect. For many years we had been reassured that his toe walking was a passing phase, and none of my children had ever needed any kind of orthotic. I found the experience to be so much easier than I’d feared! It was - in many ways, still is - unclear exactly which process is driving the problem. My child has autism, mild cerebral palsy, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hypermobility variant), as well as profound juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (sJIA). Any one of those processes could cause toe-walking; but they might not all need the same intervention. The orthotist we met at Hanger Clinic was patient and friendly about the number of unknowns, though. If it bothered her, she never showed it. She was also incredibly sweet with my little boy. Like many of their patients, no doubt, my son has a LOT of medical providers and so he has some anxiety about meeting new ones. She was relaxed and patient, though. She didn’t seem to resent being asked the same question repeatedly. (Most important to him: will a provider need bloodwork?). His anxiety and his autism mean that you don’t always know what version of chatty you’re going to get. In at least one of our appts, it involved him asking her lots of pointed questions about HER medical and orthotic history. (I was horrified and tried unsuccessfully to re-direct the conversation). Instead of acting defensive or offended, though - as many people might have - she simply talked to him respectfully, like he was an equal person. I was so relieved and so grateful! At the end of our appt, my son felt so bonded to her that he even gave her a series of hugs! She didn’t act weirded out, she simply reciprocated his very genuine show of affection. That was such a lovely touch on her part - not an expectation I could ever have of any provider, but such a generous one. When we left, my son talked a long time about how much he liked her and how nice she was. I could not agree more! We’ve had no issues with our AFOs, but I feel confident that Hanger help if we did. They’ve always strongly emphasized that they’re available for any help with the AFOs, no questions asked. That’s so reassuring, especially with such an expensive piece of equipment. The appts were easy to make and to reschedule. The clinic itself is very clean and cheerful. Even the estimated payment we made was exactly correct. There were no extra issues for me to deal with in terms of insurance or extra balances; it was incredibly easy. Overall, I recommend Hanger Clinic in Cedar Park so highly!"
