"Dr. Vazquez handled the treatment of a 20 year combat veteran so horribly today. He made personal insults insinuating my mother was only there for pills, that she was putting on a show that his "cancer patients don't even do", etc. All in front of his staff and other patients. My mother has waited to get seen by a pain specialist for almost 2 years because the process with the VA has been horrible. She has chronic pain issues but doesn't get anything in the way of relief. Definitely no narcotics, as he made it seem thats all she wanted. She hasn't been prescribed narcotic pain meds since 2013, because she has tried literal surgeries and other treatments to help manage her pain so she wouldn't have to take pills. Dr. Vazquez was going to prescribe codeine to help her ride out some very serious issues she's been having for the past 1.5 months that have caused a lot of different issues on her body and causing much pain. She was going to go to the ER right after this appointment but since she was getting codeine, she thought it would help her wait until tomorrow with some relief. One of the nurses at the front told us that she was sending the prescription right away, and confirmed with my mother and myself multiple times as the VA pharmacy was closing very soon and I was going to have to get there quick. She said she was sending it right that minute, specifically so my mom wouldn't have to wait over the weekend to get the prescription. Long story short, the prescription was not there. The VA pharmacist was hung up on by the El Paso Pain Center answering service twice and so was I. One of them was discussing my mother's information with me for 4 minutes and then asked if I was the pharmacist. They were discussing her information without knowing who they were speaking to. So, we raced to the VA for nothing. By this time, it was 430 and they closed at 5 and we were at the VA. So I had to race back to the EPPC. We get there and I explain what happened. The other receptionist or nurse at the front said she remembered the other nurse specifically saying she was sending my mother's prescription "right away" which was an hour before this. So the other nurse comes to the front and my mom finally made it upstairs and was upset. The nurse lied to our faces and said she never told us she was sending it right away and that the doctor sends prescriptions at the end of the day. My mother started crying and was very upset by this point. The doctor came to the front and told us that he has other patients and sends the prescription at EOD. We explained what happened with the nurse who told us she was doing it herself, right away - he acted as if this was our fault and said the nurse can't do that, only he can do that and he hadn't yet. He didn't even address that we were explicitly told by his staff the prescription was sent and would be there when we got to the VA. Instead of apologizing or even listening to what happened, Dr. Vazquez got defensive and personal. Told my mom she needed to find a different doctor. My mom was crying and raising her voice obviously as this had been a horrid day. Her and Dr. Vazquez were just going back and forth so I told my mom to leave so I could talk to him. I had not yelled or cursed at all, but he then shut the door in my face as I was trying to talk to him. So I went to the front window and tried to explain to the 2 nurses that my mom has been through so much trying to get her pain addressed for years and that she does not just act that way for no reason. Then the nurse admitted she did say she was sending the prescription right away. Dr. Vazquez comes back out and insults my mother some more, says "you'll get your pills" over and over but that he won't see my mom after this. I say okay and try to explain to him what happened, but he keeps walking away from me. When I'm asking where they'll be sent, we agree on a Walgreens. The prescription was never sent. So, another lie and more hours wasted driving and calling around. Today was horrible. Dr. Vazquez lied to and insulted me and mother."
