About the Business

Thelma Cares Academy

Thelma Cares Academy, located at 7343 Alabonson Road in Houston, Texas, is a child care center founded by Thelma Anderson over 27 years ago. The academy caters to low to moderate-income families in the Northwest area of Houston, providing a safe and nurturing environment for children. Thelma Cares Academy focuses on the foundational fundamentals necessary for early childhood development, aiming to make a lasting impact on the lives of their students.

Thelma Cares Academy has a strong community presence and has seen many of its students go on to attend and graduate from prestigious universities such as Clark Atlanta University, Hampton University, Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern University, and Dillard University. In honor of Thelma's mother, Mrs. Anita M. Fortune, who had a passion for caring for children, the academy offers a $4000 scholarship to select students each year. Thelma Anderson personally funds these scholarships, demonstrating her commitment to the success and well-being of her students. Thelma Cares Academy is not just an institution, but a place where children are loved, nurtured, and supported in their educational journey.

"My kids and I love it at the daycare. The employees are sweet, caring, respectful, and informative. They have field trips during the summer and they're always doing something fun. Also she has reasonable prices."

"Both of my children have been going to this daycare since they were newborns and they love all the staff that are there. They all are very professional, enjoy what they do, and really have the children's best interest. My children always leave the daycare full and with new knowledge everyday. I would recommend this daycare to anyone. They treat everyone like family!"

"Extremely unprofessional after your money is accepted! This school prides itself on being academic. Truthfully, my child (age 4) has never come home with any type of work. Moreover, Thelma is extremely rude, which is expected when the childcare facility is ran by a 70 year old woman. There have been many occasions when Thelma has greeted me at the door with conversation that should have been private. Furthermore, she told me, as well as everyone else who happened to be in the vicinity, that my child was "unteachable." It amazes me that an organization that claims it stands for "education and learning" has this type of thought process. As an educator myself, I was extremely flabbergasted and annoyed! I withdrew my child that same day. Finally, I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but every time I dropped my child off to school or picked him up, the kids (quantity 15-20) were always packed in a small space watching television or playing with 1 or 2 sets of blocks split between them. Run FAR, FAR, FAR away from this degradation they call a school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"I can't even express what this daycare means to me. My children has just began going to this center in July and it has been truly an amazing experience. The name of this child care also reflects the person who runs it. Thelma truly cares, she doesn't just watch your children, she teaches them language skills, and prepares them for school. My 3 year old is recognizing words on my 7 year olds spelling list and counting all the way to 100. Among these things they are happy. They wake up ready to go to Thelma to see Britany and Natasha. I have recommended it to my sister who has moved her two children as well and we are all happy. If you are looking for a daycare you will find that and so much more at Thelma Cares Academy."
