"We used to loved this place but no more when it started getting packed. They seem to be in a hurry and not as thorough as before. Service staff attitude is not attentive, the bowls, spoons and cups are dirty and have a few stalks of vegts stuck in them, and the food is not as fresh as before"

"Hokkaido is one of the more affordable sushi spots in Bellaire. The prices here are pretty comparable to another similar spot not too far away. The menu is very long, be sure to take a comprehensive look before getting in line to order. You don't really get table service here, just order all your food at once and someone will bring it out to you. There's free miso soup and iced water (tastes like tap) and iced black/green tea. I ordered chawanmushi to start as an app, tuna temaki (handroll) and salmon sashimi plate. I also sampled the grilled Sanma (Pacific Saury). Tuna temaki is pretty decent but I've had better. The salmon sashimi is very mediocre, not sure why they are giving thick cuts of sashimi as that is atypical in authentic Japanese cuisine. The chawanmushi and grilled Sanma were my favorite. I came here around 11:00ish on a Friday morning, it was surprisingly super crowded. There are a lot of Asian families and also quite a few schoolboys from Strake down the street. The ambiance is super casual and I don't think the tables are all that clean, they do wipe down the tables but there is still some kind of sticky residue on the surface. I will come back next time to try the donburi and teppanyaki."
