About the Business

New York State Executive Mansion

The New York State Executive Mansion, located at 138 Eagle Street in Albany, New York, is a historic local government office and tourist attraction. Originally built in 1856 for Albany businessman Thomas Olcott, the mansion has undergone several renovations over the years, including a French Empire style update in the 1870s. It became the official residence of the New York State Governor in 1877.

Notable events at the mansion include a grand reception for poet William Cullen Bryant hosted by Governor Tilden in 1875, and the swearing-in of Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1929. The mansion also saw a fire in 1961 that destroyed the drawing room.

First Lady Mrs. Matilda Cuomo oversaw a restoration of the mansion in the 1980s, preserving its historic charm. The Princess Suite, named after Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, has hosted a number of famous guests including Presidents Truman, McKinley, and Taft, as well as foreign dignitaries and notable figures.

The mansion features a basement with various rooms for staff workspaces, storage, and mechanical needs. It also has a kitchen on the first floor, next to the dining room. The mansion is used for official functions, meetings with officials, and entertaining dignitaries. Newly elected Governors traditionally take their oath of office at the mansion on New Year's Eve.

With its rich history and elegant architecture, the New York State Executive Mansion is a must-visit destination for those interested in the state's political heritage.

"Had a wonderful time at governor Kathy Hochul's ADA anniversary and disability pride month celebration at the Executive Mansion. The grounds and building are beautiful and the staff was engaging, courteous and went above and beyond in many ways."

"I am only giving this a 1 star because I cannot give it a 0 star. I am a 10 year old boy that lost my spring break. We need it a lot because of the stress we are under. Kids need time off. If we still have spring break we can still social distance. Please reconsider."
