About the Business

Villa Lewaro

Villa Lewaro, located at 67 North Broadway in Irvington, New York, is a historic institution that serves as a tourist attraction and a reminder of the remarkable life of Madam C.J. Walker, America's first self-made female millionaire. The Villa, designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1976, was the intellectual gathering place for notable leaders of the Harlem Renaissance. The property, which sits on 3 1/8 acres of sloping landscape, has intact interiors in good condition and retains a high degree of integrity.

Ambassador Harold E. Doley, Jr. and Mrs. Doley owned and lived at Villa Lewaro from 1993 to 2018, protecting it in perpetuity through a preservation and conservation easement donated to the National Trust. In 2018, the property was purchased by the New Voices Foundation, which offers women of color entrepreneurs access, capital, and expertise to scale their businesses.

Visitors to Villa Lewaro can explore the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker and learn about her achievements in the face of racial challenges in 20th century America. The Foundation continues to explore possibilities for the rehabilitation and future use of the property, ensuring that this important piece of history is preserved for future generations.

"I have wanted to visit Villa Lewaro for years. I was appalled at how it looked. I would hope next visit the estate would be in better repair. Mr. R. Dennis ought to be ashamed. I asked a young lady to accompany me and visit the estate,. she was from Liberia. It took us awhile on the train, to get to Irvington, NY. She asked me if the Madam would be home by the time we got there. I explained, and she was not more than I was, but, clearly disappointed also. Will send pictures after uploading! We could not enter so we took pictures on the outside."
