About the Business

Oden Island Nature Preserve

Oden Island Nature Preserve is a peaceful park and tourist attraction located at 3160 Leeward Drive in Petoskey, Michigan, United States. The preserve features large old-growth trees and fragile wetlands, providing a serene environment for visitors to enjoy. Parking is available at the trailhead, where approximately one mile of foot trails offers views of the island's eastern perimeter and two benches for lakeside relaxation.

In 2000, a successful fundraising effort led to the Conservancy's purchase of this undeveloped waterfront property, preventing a controversial 34-unit subdivision from being built. The preserve now plays a crucial role in maintaining the water quality of Crooked Lake, which connects to the Inland Waterway. The community came together to raise nearly $1 million in just three months for the acquisition, showcasing a strong commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the area.

To visit the preserve, take US-31 north from Petoskey for 3¼ miles, then turn right onto Pickerel Lake Road. Follow for 4 miles until it becomes Channel Road, then continue for 1 mile until Oden Island Road. Turn left onto Oden Island Road, then right onto Leeward Drive until you see the Conservancy logo sign at the end.

Explore the diverse plant and animal species at Oden Island Nature Preserve using the iNaturalist guide and contribute to conservation efforts by documenting more species on iNaturalist.org and eBird.org. Due to recent late-night activities, visitation hours are now limited to sunrise to sunset to ensure a peaceful experience for all visitors.
