About the Business

Kalamazoo Defender

Kalamazoo Defender, located at 151 South Rose Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is a non-profit public defender office that prioritizes love, compassion, and equity over judgment and shame. Chief Defender Matt Wait, felony attorney Ellen Christie, and Chief Client Navigator Taylor Sayers are dedicated to providing zealous legal representation with a holistic lens to their clients. They understand that systemic barriers such as racism and trauma often contribute to their clients' legal situations, leading to extended sentences and repeated charges.

Kalamazoo Defender works to break these cycles of injustice by reducing barriers to needed services and providing multidisciplinary care through their hub, The Village. They recently held a public event at the Douglass Community Association to answer questions about criminal defense and the criminal justice system, with representatives from the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney also in attendance. Additionally, for those who cannot afford an attorney, Kalamazoo Defender has a plan in place to ensure everyone has access to quality legal representation. Their goal is to increase transparency in the criminal justice system and create a community that values compassion and equity.

"Great people over there, Alexis worked my case, and boy did she...she got everything knocked down to just time served, no probation no costs, just free to go. That's when she blindsided me, I had a second case I got like 2 mo. After the one she worked. Somehow she worked it in also, and that one just..went away!!! Could not be more happy had I spent $2,000 on a retainer!!! --"The FREE BEE""

"After turning myself in I got a court appointed attorney for my case, I have been living in Florida so my attorney got it where I was able to go back to Florida & him & his paralegal partners continued contact with me. Looking at 3 years & at the end I was told to pay restitution & the 3 years won't have to be done so I paid them got sentenced with time served Attorney DeAngelo is a dark good attorney the people there are real friendly as well. I was scared to take a court appointed attorney but they did me so good so my advice is to not be scared but open to the people at this office"
