Kalamazoo Defender
Kalamazoo Defender, located at 151 South Rose Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is a non-profit public defender office that prioritizes love, compassion, and equity over judgment and shame. Chief Defender Matt Wait, felony attorney Ellen Christie, and Chief Client Navigator Taylor Sayers are dedicated to providing zealous legal representation with a holistic lens to their clients. They understand that systemic barriers such as racism and trauma often contribute to their clients' legal situations, leading to extended sentences and repeated charges. Kalamazoo Defender works to break these cycles of injustice by reducing barriers to needed services and providing multidisciplinary care through their hub, The Village. They recently held a public event at the Douglass Community Association to answer questions about criminal defense and the criminal justice system, with representatives from the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney also in attendance. Additionally, for those who cannot afford an attorney, Kalamazoo Defender has a plan in place to ensure everyone has access to quality legal representation. Their goal is to increase transparency in the criminal justice system and create a community that values compassion and equity.
