About the Business

Sew Cranky is a home goods store located at 322 Quincy Street in Hancock, Michigan, United States. Founded by Michael Sabo and Ginger Alberti, Sew Cranky is a unique institution that specializes in sharing the love of "hands on history" through the restoration and sale of antique hand crank sewing machines.

Ginger, a professional seamstress, was inspired to start Sew Cranky after seeing hand crank machines used by a group called "the Cranky Ladies" at events. Together with Michael, they acquired, restored, and started selling these beautiful machines, showcasing the craftsmanship and history behind each piece.

At Sew Cranky, visitors can not only purchase restored antique sewing machines but also participate in workshops where they can create their own piece of "hands on history" using these unique machines. The institution also offers repairs for heirloom sewing machines, ensuring that these pieces of history are preserved for future generations.

With a wide selection of restored machines from the late 1800s to the 1950s, Sew Cranky offers a glimpse into the development of the sewing machine industry and its impact on society. Each machine is carefully restored by Michael and Ginger, showcasing the original decals, paint, and design of these historic pieces.

Sew Cranky's mission is to create something beautiful with something beautiful, allowing visitors to experience the joy of sewing on a piece of history. Join Sew Cranky at their workshops at 322 Quincy Street in Hancock, Michigan, for a truly unique and hands-on experience.

"This place helps me recall my grandmother lovingly sewing clothes for our family. The owners' passion for creating art on their antique hand-cranked sewing machines lets me feel my grandmother's spirit. They provide sewing lessons and sell incredible one-of-a-kind items."

"Ginger and Mike are fantastic! I've made a couple of projects here and recommended others, too. Mike completely renovated my old Singer and is very knowledgeable. You'll always find a friendly face and may even go home with one of their beautiful hand crank sewing machines."

"It is rather a spontaneous visit to this store and turns out so so so lovely place! This is my first time using an antique hand-crank sewing machine and Ginger patiently teach me how to do it! I (we) made a coaster with only $3 30 minutes workshop. Thank you Ginger for the conversation and your passion inspired me!"

"I can't say enough about how neat this place is! Ginger and Mike are so nice and helpful and knowledgeable! Whether you want to go in and sew something fun on their antique hand-crank sewing machines or buy one an antique hand-crank machine or just need a machine repaired, you're going to leave happy! They've fixed several machines for me at a very reasonable price and today we sewed a project with them! Great place!!! Highly recommended!!!"
