About the Business

Eldred Theater, located at 2070 Adelbert Road in Cleveland, Ohio, is a historic institution known for its rich theatrical heritage. Originally built as a spiritual center for student life at Adelbert College, Eldred Hall has become a hub for the performing arts on campus.

The theater's roots can be traced back to 1898 when the Sock and Buskin Club began staging student-written revues, comedies, and Shakespearean plays. Over the years, the Eldred Players and other drama clubs in the community joined forces to provide quality theater for Cleveland audiences.

In 1931, English professor Barclay Leathem founded the Department of Drama and Theater, offering courses at the graduate level and establishing the University Players. Under Leathem's leadership, Eldred Theater became a pioneer in avant-garde theater and established strong ties with local theaters such as The Cleveland Play House and Karamu House.

Notable alumni like Nadine Miles, a Broadway star and 1936 Flora Stone Mather graduate, contributed to Eldred's legacy by directing acclaimed productions like T.S. Eliot's "Murder in the Cathedral." Leathem also introduced dance to Case through Kathryn Karipides and established the Barn Players, a summer theater group that performed at Squire Valleevue Farm.

Today, Eldred Theater continues to uphold its tradition of excellence in theater education under the leadership of John Orlock and Peter Hackett. The joint professional actor training program, established in 1995, celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2016-17, ensuring that Eldred remains a vibrant center for the performing arts in Cleveland.
