About the Business

Emery Theater

The Emery Theater, located at 110 East Central Parkway in Cincinnati, Ohio, is a historic institution with a rich history of providing professional theatre for young audiences. As the oldest professional theatre for young audiences in the country, The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT) has created lifelong memories for children and families for over a century. The Emery Theater, once home to legendary arts organizations, including TCT, fell into disrepair over the last 53 years but is now set to be restored to its former glory.

With more than $45 million raised, including Federal Historic and New Markets Tax Credits allocations, TCT officially purchased the Emery Theater on December 22, 2023. Construction is set to begin soon, bringing new life to the theater and preserving its rich history while ushering in a new era. The Emery Theater will be transformed into a state-of-the-art venue with modern technology like projection mapping and a theatrical lift.

The Emery Theater's acoustically perfect space has hosted legendary figures such as Sergei Rachmaninoff, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. TCT's purchase of the theater will ensure that it continues to inspire diverse audiences with original works and innovative programming for generations to come. The institution's focus on diversity in casting and production crews, as well as its commitment to historic preservation and economic growth in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, make it a vital part of the Cincinnati arts community.

As TCT moves forward with its plans for the Emery Theater, it is important to note that the annual operating expenses for the theater will be essentially the same as the current rental cost for the Taft Theatre, with the potential for increased revenue from extended show dates. The Emery Theater's restoration will provide a permanent home for TCT and a unique venue for the region, ensuring that the institution's impact is sustained for years to come.
