"Last year, my caseworker referred me to Joe at Fairborn Liberty Tax, to file a simple no-income tax return so I could get my stimulus money. I asked multiple times if he was sure he didn’t want to charge me, and he said the way he saw it, this wasn’t tax money, so he wasn’t going to charge anyone to file for it. Several times over the last year I’ve reached out to Joe and asked him to check on my status, because I hadn’t yet received my checks. He assured me the IRS was behind on getting payments out, and I trusted that. Last month, both my caseworker and I reached out to him via email; he returned neither of them. Today, almost exactly one year later, and just days before the final deadline to file for stimulus checks, still no checks. My caseworker was going to just file for me, to make sure they had received my info, and she was trying to determine what he had filed for me and what she needed to file, if anything. We called Fairborn, repeatedly. Despite the posted hours, no one answered. We called *six* branches before we finally reached Georgette, the franchise owner for seven locations around Dayton. I explained our issue, and gave her my social security number so that she could port my file from the Fairborn location to the Brandt Pk location, and find out what, if anything, was left to be done. Turns out, I was NOWHERE in their system. This wasn’t just a one-time meet up after which I sat and waited around for a year. I was proactive in staying in touch and asking questions until it felt like I was getting on his nerves, so I decided to trust the process and wait. Only to find out that I was nowhere in his system at all. I have two suspicions—the first is that he made a mistake, and it didn’t go through, and when I called to check, he gave me generic answers instead of looking up my file like he claimed to. Equally, I suspect that he took my information, filed a paper return, and pocketed my $3200. When the truth is verified, I will update my review. However! Don’t give up on Liberty entirely. Georgette owns the Brandt Pike branch, the Xenia branch, and five others. She was beyond appalled by my situation, and while there usually would be a charge, she set me up with one of her employees for an appointment the day before the filing period closes, free of charge. From the twenty minutes I spent with her on the phone, she seemed to be an honest and empathetic person, and passionate about her job (“it’s exhausting… but I love it.”) and as of right now I would absolutely recommend folks to her location. She also informed me that she knows and would call the owner of the Fairborn location on my behalf, and make him aware of the situation. If he reaches out I will also update with that."
