About the Business

Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc

Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO) is a non-profit regional law firm located at 545 West Market Street in Lima, Ohio, United States. At a time of economic and health uncertainty, LAWO protects families striving to stay safe and housed by defending the rights of tenants. For over 20 years, LAWO has been advocating for justice for communities of color and people living in poverty who have nowhere else to turn. With 14 out of every 100 people living in poverty in their service area, LAWO addresses civil legal problems affecting over 70% of those in poverty each year, partnering with clients and community organizations to find legal solutions to keep communities out of poverty.

LAWO provides high-quality legal assistance in civil matters to eligible low-income individuals and groups in Ohio, helping them achieve self-reliance, equal justice, and economic opportunity. They focus on protecting the rights of individuals and promoting systemic change in civil rights and poverty law. LAWO's services include preventing homelessness, protecting renters, assisting veterans, supporting seniors' independence, ensuring access to healthcare and education, and advocating for fair financial transactions.

With offices in Dayton, Defiance, Findlay, Lima, Sandusky, Springfield, and Toledo, LAWO serves 32 northwest and west central Ohio counties. Their Agricultural Worker Program covers all 88 counties in Ohio. They also provide translation services for publications upon request.

Volunteerism plays a crucial role in LAWO's work, with their Pro Bono Program allowing attorneys and law firms to dedicate their time and expertise to assist low-income individuals in their service area. They are always looking for more volunteers to join their program and make a difference in the community. To learn more about volunteering with LAWO, you can contact them via email at emelendez[at]ablelaw.org.

"Be nice to speak to a person and not have operating system continue to hang up on me, or the website keep telling me the is error loading page. How does a person even fill out an application if I can't do it after 1 pm and the online site can't be reached and I can't speak to anyone?"

"I drove up to the Lima office because when they did call me it was when I was in an interview and I wasn't able to answer. The receptionist was rude. I was put in the conference room to speak with someone on the phone. Intake wasn't even completed and I was told they can't help me."
