About the Business

Battery Cooper

Battery Cooper is a historic tourist attraction located at Pensacola Beach, Florida, United States within the Gulf Islands National Seashore. This battery is part of Fort Pickens and offers visitors a unique opportunity to see a disappearing gun in action. Constructed in 1905 and named after Lieutenant George Cooper, Battery Cooper originally housed two 6" guns that could be lowered below the walls for loading and raised for firing, making them invisible to enemy ships in the Gulf of Mexico. During World War I, the original guns were sent to France and have since been replaced with a gun from the Smithsonian Institute. Visitors can explore the battery grounds and get up close to the artillery for a closer look. Don't miss the chance to witness this piece of military history during your visit to Gulf Islands National Seashore.

"This has been a favorite of mine ever since I was a child. I love the old forts. This one also happens to be part of one of the best beaches in the country."

"Not a large area so you can see it all relatively quick. Nice views of the beach and water."

"We would go to the bay here to watch the blue angels fly or we would fish, dive for sand dollars and blue crabs. Perfect place to watch the prettiest sunset. Just bring bug spray because the biting flies are no joke!!"
