Five Star Improvements

"I really don't like to leave negative reviews, so I've waited on this for a while. But I feel I need to say something about my experience with Five Star. We have a small house in the city. Five Star replaced our roof a couple of years ago. They were very communicative up front and had a strong sales pitch. They did recommend a good improvement to our roofing system. The crew that actually did the work was fantastic - fast, kind, and respectful. But clearly the company didn't communicate well with the crew, because I noticed they didn't install the roof vents towards the end of their work day. The crew said the company didn't tell them about it. (I'm not sure anyone else would have noticed if I hadn't been watching all day.) The crew manager graciously came back on his own for half a day's work to install them. Also, in the long run, we've realized that they failed to acknowledge our concerns about a dormer roof we have. They told us it was pitched enough to shingle, and now a couple years later, other contractors are telling us this was a poor choice. Water can and has leaked into the bathroom window because there is no drainage or overhang up there. But most importantly - We had a significant leak in our skylight within a year of having the roof replaced by Five Star. We had no issues with the skylights before. I filed a warranty claim with them, trying to follow all the right procedures. It had to be done within a certain amount of time from us noticing the issue, and I had to submit a letter by certified mail. Nobody every contacted me about the letter. After calling the company multiple times over the course of weeks, they sent someone out to inspect it and of course said there was nothing wrong with the workmanship, so it wouldn't be covered by the warranty. They, however, agreed to send a guy over to see if he could fix it. The leak was better for a bit but came back. I tried contacting them again multiple times, but nobody ever responded, and I gave up, honestly. I don't have the energy to take them to claims court, and I know my case isn't strong enough without more obvious evidence of poor workmanship. But now we have to pay about $10k to another contractor to fix and replace the skylight, fix all the damaged drywall and potentially framing, and put a standing seam on the dormer roof so precipitation can be brought away from the house. That's about the same we paid for Five Star to replace the entire roof. Overall we've been very displeased with this company. They didn't treat us with respect or acknowledge issues with their work, so we felt we needed to let people know. Thanks for reading."

"What can I say about this company! Tons! Awesome work and great work ethic. We had to get our bathroom ceiling redone due to a lack of an exhaust fan in there (older home) and the outcome of NOT having a fan made the ceiling "grimey" and unsightly. Ugh. We hired these guys to do a full tear down and redid the entire ceiling including new paint. It looks AWESOME! Nick was perfect for the job. He was friendly and was continuously focused on the job at hand. I would recommend him to anyone who asks "where should I go for home improvements". We have some more work we'd like to get done in the future and he's already on our radar. Great work! Excellent time frame for getting the work done. Definitely will use them again."

"I have been saving up to have windows constructed in my bedroom, since it only had a door and was pretty dark. After a few estimates I selected Five Star because I liked the quality of the window they use, and they were responsive and organized. Everyone on the team: Sara, James, James, and Jack, were accommodating to our needs. Pricing from Five Star was better than other contractors' quotes, too. The installers (Jack and James) did exactly what I requested by creating windows that appear native to the architecture of the house. You wouldn't know they were added on years later. We hope to work with them again on future projects."
