"The Lucky is my favourite Staten Island deli and I visit a few every week if not every day. The deli is a New York institution and the Lucky is an astounding implementation of this institution. Why? If you want it they have it. One week I decided to bust out my Day Of The Dead zippo lighter (I smoke the occasional cigar) because I love the artwork. But I needed lighter fluid and in the disposable age finding fluid can be tough. I searched various stores with no luck. Then one day, while paying for my soda, I saw it behind the counter at the Lucky. I like watermelon flavour Perrier. Yes, they have it. Orange, lime and plain too. On one occasion I needed a seven day candle. Oh yes, they had the colour I wanted. They have green candles as well - used in ceremonies for bringing wealth - as they sell the vast array of lotto tickets the state sells. (I have to say that back in the day, when the mob ran the numbers, winners weren't taxed on their winnings ;-) I generally don't play lotto - my chances of winning are better, mathematically, if I don't play. But I bought a scratch off as a photographic prop (I thought "Fat Cat" was funny) and lo and behold I won $25. Trying to avoid junk food? They have a deli counter where they make and sell sandwiches. They also carry a variety of granola bars - Nature Valley is good for people with Gluten sensitivity - and vegans too (I am both). And nuts too - both the prepackaged variety (about $2 a pop) and larger quantities. The other selling point is the fact that Shin (what he likes to be called, his name is Kyung Shin) and his family - it's a family owned business - charge the lowest prices around. I can buy a diet Coke (aw c'mon we all love industrial waste products) for $1.50 at the Lucky. Across Bay Street, at Bagels By The Bay, sodas cost $1.75 and down the block (on Hylan Blvd) the (In)Convenient Mart charges $2.00. Oh, let's not forget the flowers. When I buy flowers for my wife - May Day, Mothers Day, etc. - I buy from Shin. He charges $17.00 to $20.00 for a dozen roses. Local florists charge around $50. Now, it's true that some florists will deliver a dozen roses for that sum (most are more) but I have found that Shin's flowers last longer. That's just the way it is. I'll see you at the Lucky...stop by and say hi to Shin, his wife Sue and of course Mary who is always friendly and feisty."
