About the Business

HEPIUS Innovation Lab

HEPIUS Innovation Lab, located at 5210 Eastern Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, is a cutting-edge institution dedicated to treating and diagnosing spinal cord injuries. Named after the Greek god of medicine and healing, the HEPIUS team brings together experts in neurosurgery, biomedical engineering, radiology, and more to develop innovative solutions for those with spinal cord injuries.

The lab recently received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for the Multi-function Spinal Cord Implant (MUSIC) device, which provides crucial ultrasound imaging during the acute recovery phase after spinal cord injury. With approximately 17,000 new cases of SCI diagnosed annually in the US, the need for advanced technologies to monitor and treat these injuries is more important than ever.

Using state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging systems and equipment, the HEPIUS lab is able to design custom ultrasound probes for precise neuromodulation and tissue ablation in spinal cord injury rehabilitation. The lab also conducts research using porcine models, which closely mimic human anatomy and response, to ensure the effectiveness of their treatments.

With a fully stocked mock intensive care unit and advanced fabrication capabilities, the HEPIUS lab is at the forefront of translational medicine, striving to bring their groundbreaking technologies from the lab to the clinic. Donations to support Dr. Amir Manbachi's research at the HEPIUS lab can be made online, helping to further their mission of advancing spinal cord injury treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.
