The restaurant was founded by twin brothers Simos and Nikos Marmaras, who inherited their love for food and recipes from their father, who owned a Greek fine dining restaurant for over 40 years. The concept of The Big Greek Cafe was inspired by their late mother's vision of a place where relationships and community are built around delicious meals. Since opening their first location in Silver Spring in 2009, The Big Greek Cafe has become a local favorite, known for its traditional Greek dishes and warm hospitality. Patrons can often find the brothers' father in the kitchen creating weekly specials and greeting guests, continuing the family tradition of sharing their love for Greek cuisine with the community.
