About the Business

Voorhees Nature Preserve

Voorhees Nature Preserve is a beautiful park and tourist attraction located at 250-398 Bristol Mine Road in Colonial Beach, Virginia, United States. Visitors can enjoy four miles of wooded trails and scenic views of the Rappahannock River. The preserve was donated to TNC in 1994 by Alan M. and Nathalie Voorhees and provides excellent habitat for bald eagles and other wildlife. Thanks to the support of volunteer Jeff Wright, Voorhees is now open year-round and features a new parking area, entrance trail, and overlook spots. The preserve is part of the Virginia Bird and Wildlife Trail, with abundant bird species such as bald eagles and ospreys. Visitors can explore the mature hardwood forest, flowering wetland plants, and unique natural features like the two kissing trees. By becoming a preserve steward, visitors can support TNC's ongoing work to protect and preserve these natural treasures for future generations.

"Beautiful trail! We got to the park about an hour before dusk, so we were gonna hike 30 minutes, then turn back. We ended up hiking the yellow trail to the river overlook, and it was beautiful! The last 10 minutes of the hike was a decent incline. I feel it in my cheeks a few days later. I would definitely do the other trail if we're ever back in the area."

"Well maintained and cared for hiking area. Clearly marked trails. Great views at the viewpoints. At the end of the 4.1 out and back trails there's a beaver dam under the bridge. I recommend being quite to possibly see a beaver. For most of the trail there is views of the river to take in. This is hilly in the beginning, but evens out once you're at the river. If you're in the area and want a nice quick hike I can't recommend this one enough"

"Well marked trails. They are in and out trails, not a loop except for Hollow Tree. Trail is moderate to tough at times. Lots of elevations and slippery after precipitation. Great overlook of the Rappahannock River."

"This trail is full of beauty and beautiful views. Its 100% worth it. About 4.1 miles from start all the way to the river walk, longer if you see the tree as well. The pond trail has some lovely views as well. It's a wonderful way to spend a few hours. I do wish there was a bench or two along the creek to sit and enjoy the flowing water. This trail is NOT flat. This trail is NOT stroller friendly, only parts would be bike friendly. This trail is NOT wide in all spots. Enjoy!"

"A wonderful and well marked trail near the Rappahannock River. We had so much fun that, even though our kids didn't realize how far we were going, we were able to get them to make a 4 mile hike between the river views and the Hollow Tree and everything. TNC and the Virginia DWR have done a great job of making these trails very easy to identify and follow, and the six car parking lot had ample space because this is a hidden gem. There are no facilities other than the trails, but afterwards we went to Montross Brewery and had a great time there as well. Wonderful place to go!"
