About the Business

Hammond Park

Hammond Park, located at 10700 Glen Hannah Drive in Laurel, Maryland, is a beautiful park and tourist attraction that offers a variety of outdoor recreational activities for visitors to enjoy. The park is part of the larger Blandair Regional Park, which includes three separate areas: North, West, and East. In case of inclement weather or for program status information, visitors can call 410-313-3673.

The history of the land where Hammond Park is located dates back to the time when Susquehannock and Piscataway tribes hunted and had seasonal camps in the area. The first European settlers who came to the region were Puritans, Quakers, and Catholics seeking religious freedom. Over the years, the land changed hands and was owned by various families, including the Talbots, Dorsey, Howard, Weems, Bland, Mayo, and Gaither families.

The name "Blandair" comes from Theodorick Bland, who purchased the land in 1844 as a country retreat. The property included slave quarters and a granary, which still stand today. The land continued to be used as a country home by subsequent owners, including the Gaither family, who built the brick manor house that still stands in the park.

Over the years, the land has transitioned from a dairy farm to fruit orchards, with various families owning and operating the property. The last owners, Henry and Lillian Smith, bought the farm in 1937 and raised Arabian horses on the land. After their passing, the property was eventually purchased by Howard County and developed into a park for public enjoyment.

Today, Hammond Park offers a glimpse into the history of the land and provides opportunities for outdoor recreation, including walking paths, parking lots, basketball courts, a skate park, pickleball courts, and shade structures. Visitors can explore the park and learn about the diverse history of the area, making it a valuable destination in Howard County.

"HS kids hang out here to smoke. They have no regard or concern for the young children and parents who use the kiddy playground area. Nice tennis courts and short, paved trial for walking. Just be prepared to catch a whiff of the weed"

"Came here for a baseball tournament. Located within a residential community and backs up to a middle school. Very small parking lot. You might end up parking within the neighborhood. One field does not have a back fence. The spectator area does not have bleachers and the grounds are wonky so you might find yourself watching on a hill or in the outfield. Nice playground though! Port-a-potties were in REALLY bad shape when we were there. Not sure how often they clean them. Bring toilet paper."

"Great outdoor facilities. Pavilion is spacious and well maintained. Pavilion has a grill. Playground is huge, equipment looks relatively new and in great location. The water fountains each contain a dog bowl for your thirsty pets. Tennis court and large field for outdoor activities also located at the park. Relatively quiet area."

"Playground has two parts - one for children ages 2-5, other for 5-12. We were there with our 16 months old son, and he had a lot of fun. Very clean place."
