About the Business
The German-American Friendship Garden, located at 1600 Constitution Avenue Northwest in Washington, DC, is a beautiful park that serves as a symbol of the longstanding friendship between the United States and Germany. Originally dedicated in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the garden features native plant species from both countries and a pair of fountains that welcome visitors to learn more about the history and diplomacy between the two nations.
In 2022, the Trust for the National Mall officially unveiled the restored German-American Friendship Garden after a multi-year partnership with the National Park Service and the German Embassy. Supported by Volkswagen Group of America and other corporate partners, the restoration project was a prime example of private support and expertise coming together to preserve and enhance this historic space on the National Mall.
During the unveiling ceremony, special guest speakers, including German Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Ricklef Beutin and Volkswagen Group of America CEO Scott Keogh, joined in the celebration. The ceremony featured musical performances by the United States Air Force Band, as well as the planting of a Red Oak tree to commemorate the occasion.
The garden restoration project, which began in 2013, followed the original design of landscape artist Wolfgang Oehme and included the planting of perennial beds, installation of a new irrigation system, and restoration of the central square panel. The Trust for the National Mall assumed management and maintenance responsibilities for the garden in 2018 and led revitalization efforts in 2019 and 2020, culminating in the installation of two newly rebuilt fountains that enhance the garden's energy and motion.
With its unique design blending highly textured plantings with geometric form, the German-American Friendship Garden offers visitors a peaceful retreat in the heart of the nation's capital. The restoration of this historic space was made possible through the generous support of private donors, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in preserving and maintaining the National Mall's iconic landmarks.

"Entering the German-American Friendship Garden at night felt like stepping into a magical world. The soft glow of lights turned the garden into a serene wonderland. I was captivated by the play of shadows and light on familiar paths and flowers. As I wandered, the sounds of crickets and the distant city created a soothing background. The moonlight added a touch of magic to the pergola, benches, and reflecting pool, turning them into quiet spots for contemplation. Each area revealed something new β the rose garden transformed into silhouettes, the koi pond became a mesmerizing play of ripples, and even the towering oak had a mysterious charm under the night sky. The experience went beyond visuals; it was a sensory delight. The night air carried the fragrance of jasmine and the earthy scent of soil, creating a peaceful atmosphere. The rustle of leaves and occasional bird chirps completed the natural symphony. Leaving the garden, I felt a deep sense of peace and renewal. The night had revealed a hidden beauty to this familiar place, leaving me with memories of quiet magic and the enduring embrace of nature. It's an experience that will linger in my mind long after the city's sounds have faded away."
