About the Business
Located at 95 Olmsted Walk in Washington, D.C., the Small Mammal House at the Smithsonian's National Zoo offers a unique opportunity to observe over 35 species of small mammals in environments that mimic their natural habitats. From sand cats to golden lion tamarins, visitors can witness these animals as they move, eat, and play in carefully designed enclosures.
Mixed-species exhibits provide a glimpse into how these animals interact in the wild, while enrichment programs encourage them to exercise their natural behaviors. Puzzle feeders, toys, and other stimuli are strategically placed throughout the exhibits to keep the animals mentally and physically engaged.
Outside the Small Mammal House, visitors can meet Bennett's wallabies, white-nosed coatis, and howler monkeys along the wooden boardwalk. Inside, the Inside Story exhibit uses radiographs and artifacts to explain the connection between animal body structure and behavior.
The institution also emphasizes conservation efforts, with a focus on species like the black-footed ferret and golden lion tamarin. SCBI scientists have been instrumental in breeding and preserving these species to ensure their survival for future generations.
Visitors can also explore other areas of the zoo, such as the Elephant Community Center, Great Ape House, and Think Tank, to observe a wide variety of animals and learn more about their conservation efforts.
The Small Mammal House is a fascinating destination for animal lovers of all ages, offering a glimpse into the lives of these unique and diverse creatures. Donations and memberships help support the zoo's conservation efforts and provide exclusive benefits to members, making it a rewarding experience for all who visit.

"Very fun exhibit. All the animals here are very cute and lively. Several of the displays of nocturnal mammals have the lighting inverted so that visitors can see them during the day. There was a line when I visited to enter, but it was quick."
