About the Business

Located in Bowdoinham, Maine, the Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area, also known as Swan Island, offers a unique and unforgettable Maine experience for visitors. This State Wildlife Management Area welcomes hikers, campers, birders, anglers, wildlife watchers, and explorers to its shores at the head of Merrymeeting Bay. Visitors can immerse themselves in history, surround themselves in nature, and discover abundant wildlife.
Swan Island features a kids-only trout fishing pond, a wildlife viewing tower, and special food plots for wildlife. The island preserves a part of history and a place in time, with a rich past that includes an Abanaki Indian summer hunting camp and an active farming community in the 1800s. Five historic homes still stand on the island, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) began acquiring properties on the island in the 1940s, and by 1988, it became the Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area in its entirety. Come visit Swan Island to experience its history, nature, and wildlife firsthand.

Reviews
"A group of us have gotten together for a camping weekend on Swan Island for the past 6 years. We always have a great time hiking, biking and hanging out by the campfire. There is a lot of wildlife and birdwatching to do. The ferry no longer runs to bring you and your gear over so plan on bringing a boat or canoe."
"Wonderful wild land. Trails can be hard to follow as blazes are a little to far apart. Bring a ton of tick repellant"
"Very peaceful."
"We enjoyed exploring. I guess it is much less crowded this time of year as we had the island to ourselves. We brought our bicycles to ride on the dirt road. The hiking trails are nice. It was exciting to come upon the beaver hut next to the path. We saw a deer and eagles. Bathrooms have electricity. We packed our lunch and ate in the camping area sitting on Adirondack chairs overlooking the water with birds to view. When it started to rain we sheltered in a lean to. Our only complaints were that trails weren't well marked so we didn't know how far we had walked; and when we came back to the dock we were at the mercy of the boat driver as he was over 30 minutes late, but very polite and thankful for our patience. We look forward to our next visit to explore more of the island."
"No words to describe how peaceful displaces even when your girlfriend drives you there"
