"The most unique stay ever! Be sure to bring your history lovers to this beautiful 1800s lodge. Bill was the host with the most, giving us the full building and history tour when we arrived. All facilities (bathroom, kitchen, appliances) are communal, facilitating great conversations with other guests. This is a unique alternative to a hotel in Portland, and for people who want character out of their accommodations. If you're going as a couple, I can't recommend room 9 enough. The full-ocean view is breathtaking. We didn't want to leave! Bringing a car is definitely not necessary, but we did because we only stayed for one night and wanted to be able to see the whole island. The lodge isn't far, but it does involve a walk. I dream about returning to the 8th Maine Regiment Lodge and bringing family along. I really loved my time here."

"This is not a 5 Star hotel so much as a 5 Star experience. It's charming as all get out to stay in a building with so much history and character and that is also a sort of museum to the 8th Maine Regiment. Keep in mind this building is old and the bathrooms and etc reflect that. It's also very much a hostel style situation, with communal bathrooms and kitchen areas. Bill was friendly in a gruff way, but helpful at every turn and got us checked in and helped us get the bbq grill going. We had a wonderful time on the large porch overlooking the ocean and loved being in such a cozy spot!"

"This place is a gem! Fabulous views of the ocean and a nice easy walk to town. It’s full of history dating back from the late 1800’s. Dawn and Bill (the inn keepers) are excellent. They will guide you on everything you need on the island. The kitchen has all essentials to prepare your own meals (salt, pepper, olive oil, coffee, etc) We’d definitely come back!"

"Very rustic but beautiful historic site. Can't be a priss to stay here. Beds small but clean. Bathrooms a challenge if your not used to military style. Definitely get on 12 or before ferry to enjoy the island if stopping by for just the day. Everything closes early. I'd definitely do again but wife is iffy."
