"I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant after our friends selected it for dinner. I was not initially excited to try it. Most of the dishes are not necessarily unique (roasted chicken, fried fish, etc). However, each dish was really well executed. The curried mussels were the one item that was both unique and delicious. Service was great, and the vibes are very cozy and welcoming. There is a waiting area with a wood burning fireplace and offerings of peanuts. I don't know that I'd spend that much money for such standard dishes again, but I definitely left satisfied and enjoyed everything."

"Absolutely incredible dinner in a lovely atmosphere. The service was stellar and only enhanced by the thoughtful preparation of a delicious, seasonal meal. Be sure to add this place to your must-visit list. Highly recommend the scallops and big bowl of greens."

"Made our way to Pine Plains just to have dinner at Stissing House. Felt lucky to have gotten a reservation, and enjoyed the experience. Atmosphere was cozy and colonial with dim lights, candles, and wood smoke. Smoked scallops were excellent! Highly recommend. Cooked to perfection. Only 2 per order. We had the rabbit tarragon pie (for 2), the Snowdance chicken, the smoked scallops, the salad with cherve and figs, the curried mussels, Jake’s Gouda, the ham, the non-alcoholic pineapple shrub and ginger refresher. We were too full to enjoy dessert, which we saw others have, and they all looked enormous! The chicken was excellent - perfectly cooked and highlighted the essence of the chicken with simple salt seasoning. Accompanying roasted potatoes and greens were lackluster. Wished they had given those as much attention as they did the chicken. The rabbit pie was well executed - with flaky pastry crust and generous amounts of gravy in the filling. However, overall the rabbit filling was rather ordinary. There wasn’t intense rabbit flavor or any real complexity to the flavor profile, so a bit of a missed opportunity to showcase fall flavors. Gouda was yummy. Ham was supposedly glazed with apple but there was no discernible apple essence. It was very tender though and not at all salty, which ham typically is, so it was a nice complement to the Gouda. Salad was very good. Lettuce and radicchio were some of the freshest and crispiest greens we’ve ever had at a restaurant, so pleasantly surprised by the quality. Curried mussels were a fail. Curry flavor seemed to be from a powdered curry base and more than anything the whole thing was overwhelmingly tarragon-forward. Sadly didn’t enjoy this dish at all. Two soggy pieces of bread under the mussels and left those as the sauce was so strangely flavored. The sauce also lacked body."

"We had a pleasure of celebrating my birthday at the Stissing House. The food is forward and delicious. We were pleasantly surprised by how Chef incorporates bitterness and tanginess into her creative cooking. We absolutely enjoyed everything we ordered tonight. the service was on point and friendly."

"This is culinary level food at very high prices as one might expect. Check the menu before you go to insure there is something you're willing to try. On the plus side, the service is incredible. Their bread is also delicious and their butter tastes like they whipped it up that morning. I also had a rather unusual salad with different fruits and lettuces in it that all came together very nicely. I also had roasted chicken with rosemary potatoes (I am NOT an adventurous eater). The chicken was plump and juicy and cooked to perfection, but it tasted like, well, roasted chicken. Nothing special. The same with the rosemary potatoes, which barely tasted different than regular potatoes. Going back to the positive, their coconut cake is out of this world delicious. The atmosphere is also very nice, restored from the early 19th century. Modern additions were very tastefully done. All in all, most of the food is rather 'high brow' and just not worth it to me. It's more of an experience than a place to eat. Everything is quality, just not my cup of tea."
