About the Business

Welcome to Athlone Castle Visitor Centre, located at the heart of Athlone town on Castle St in Co. Westmeath, Ireland (postcode N37 A6D7). Our visitor centre is a must-see attraction for anyone interested in history and culture. The beautifully restored 12th century Athlone Castle is housed within the centre and is a testament to Athlone's rich heritage.

We recommend beginning with the interactive exhibitions, which bring Athlone's past to life with a range of multimedia displays and artefacts. You will be able to explore the castle's history as far back as 6,000 years ago, right up to the 21st century. The exhibitions cover a range of topics from Athlone's military history to its role as a transport hub on the River Shannon.

The castle walls provide a stunning backdrop for photos, and our knowledgeable guides will be on hand to provide historic insights and answer any questions you may have.

Additionally, Athlone Castle Visitor Centre also plays host to an array of events throughout the year, such as storytelling for children, family quiz trails, and a craft fair. Our events calendar is regularly updated, so please visit our website for the latest updates and book your tickets.

"I can recommend visiting the castle. It was very interesting for adults and kids of different age. There is also opportunity to dress up in medieval costumes and take pictures. We learned a lot of new facts and enjoyed the experience"

"An important historical location with plenty of information, although the experience was a little rough around the edges. Several of the interactive displays did not work and the loud volume of the audio across multiple exhibits in the keep made it difficult to focus on what was being said, which might be even worse for those who don't have English as a first language."

"The Castle was fun and full of great interactive, history and a large chess game. My family loved it. The staff was friendly. The views of the Shannon River were breath taken. It was raining hard and we didn’t care."

"Loads of history, interactive stuff, a wonderful view of the city itself and the River Shannon that flows right beside the Castle, and the exhibition is wonderful as well. Athlone history is intrinsically built around the Castle. Just Grand."
