"I was in the school, then called 'Windmill Road' from 1957 to 1960. I did very well and transferred to Hampton Grammar School, a year early when I was 10. These were cruel days and there was a terrible amount of corporal punishment but I ended up in Miss Crompton's class and there was none of that there.She coached me through the 11+, a year early. I remember playing on and in the old air raid shelters with my friends. An efficient and fairly academic place. The head, a Mr. Campbell, was another sadist but I never had anything to do with him. I could just hear the swishing of his cane from inside his room. He wasn't the worst, there was a Mr. Evans who didn't bother with canes, he just used to beat the children up. Amazing what was considered acceptable in those days."
