"The Sainsbury's on London Road opposite the West Croydon railway station is a historical site. Although the site was a busy pub (The Ship of fools) for a period of time not long ago, this site was one of Britain's earliest self-service supermarkets. Sainsbury's held the lease and decided not to renew JD Wetherspoons hold on the prime estate. Sainsbury's was founded in 1869 by John James Sainsbury with a store in Drury Lane in the City. His first store outside Central London in 1882 was close to the West Croydon station."
