Originally constructed in 1962 as the Library-Auditorium-Science Building, the center was extensively renovated in the early 1990s and renamed in honor of the Honorable David A. Straz, Jr., a former Carthage Trustee and Chairman of the Carthage College Board of Trustees. The dedication ceremony in 1995 was attended by Carthage alumni and friends, with remarks from various dignitaries and a portrait unveiling of Mr. Straz. The creation of the Straz Center marked the beginning of a campus transformation, with subsequent additions including the N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center, Hedberg Library, and the A. W. Clausen Center for World Business. In 2014-15, a major renovation of the center was completed, adding a new wing and enhancing classroom and laboratory space for collaborative research opportunities.
