The park has a rich history, originally used by Native American tribes as a food source and gathering place. During the Civil War, it served as a military fort and later as a farm maintained by patients at Western State Hospital. In 2018, ownership of the park was transferred to the city of Lakewood to continue its preservation and improvement.
