Built in 1935-36, this 53-foot fire lookout/observation tower offers visitors stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the San Juan Islands and, on clear days, Mount Rainier. Designed by Roland Koepf under the direction of Ellsworth Storey, the tower was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp using over 700 tons of local sandstone. Throughout its history, the tower has served various purposes, including as a fire lookout, observation/radio tower during World War II, and even as the home of television station KVOS in the 60s and 70s. Thanks to the efforts of Orcas Island residents, the tower was saved from demolition in 1973 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
