This park commemorates the Third Battle of Winchester, which took place on September 19, 1864, and was the largest and most costly battle in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War. With more than 54,000 men engaged in the conflict and over 8,600 casualties, this fierce battle saw the Confederates eventually pushed back by Federal forces in a decisive attack. Visitors to the park can explore over 6 miles of walking trails and discover more than 30 interpretive markers and monuments that provide insight into the events of that fateful day.
