Central Unit Prison Sugar Land
β OpenCentral Unit Prison Sugar Land, located at One Circle Drive in Sugar Land, Texas, is a historic abandoned prison that was created in 1930 by the 41st Legislature of Texas. Closed in 2011 and purchased by the City of Sugar Land in 2016, the prison holds a significant place in Texas history. The property is known for its unique architecture, beautiful trees, and grounds, as well as its historical significance, including being home to folk singer Lead Belly who wrote his version of "Midnight Special" while imprisoned there. Despite its intriguing history, the Central Unit Prison has become a hotspot for trespassers, including ghost hunters, who are drawn to the property's abandoned buildings and all-encompassing history. The Sugar Land Police Department has cracked down on trespassers, warning of the dangers posed by rusty staircases, broken glass, exposed beams, and holes in the floors and ground. In addition, feral hogs, snakes, and other wildlife on the property can also be dangerous.
