The new campus was made possible by a land donation from the city and an agreement between UTRGV and HCISD to share construction costs. The institution is part of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, established in 2013 to expand educational opportunities in the region, including a new School of Medicine. The partnership between UTRGV, the City of Harlingen, and HCISD highlights the growing relationship between the university, the city, and the school district, making higher education degrees more accessible to young people in the community.
