THE DRYER - Historic J.V. Cardiff & Sons Rice Dryer
β OpenLocated at 5321 1st Street in Katy, Texas, The Dryer - Historic J.V. Cardiff & Sons Rice Dryer is a museum that showcases the rich history of rice drying in Texas. Established in 1943, the first concrete rice dryer in Texas was built by J.V. Cardiff & Sons, a pioneering family in the rice industry. The institution features the original rice dryer, as well as an underground tunnel that spans the entire length of the silo. Over the years, the Cardiffs expanded their operations, building a second concrete rice dryer with double the capacity, and later, the tallest rice dryer in the country standing at 177 feet. Despite the decline of rice production in the area, the property has been preserved and is now undergoing restoration by a local developer in partnership with the Katy Heritage Society.
