Welcome to Gilbert's Isshin-ryu Karate School, where tradition meets discipline at 158 West Norris Road, Norris, Tennessee. Under the expert guidance of Darren Gilbert, a seasoned Rokudan (6th-degree Black Belt) in Isshin-ryu Karate, our school offers a unique and classical approach to martial arts training. We believe in maintaining the integrity of Karate as a martial art, not just a gymnastic sport. Our philosophy focuses on self-improvement and self-defense, emphasizing the importance of not losing rather than just winning.
Open to men, women, and children aged 13 and older, our classes prioritize technique and skill over size and strength. Darren Gilbert, deeply committed to the traditions of Okinawan Karate-do, leads our sessions with a dedication to fostering personal growth, preparedness, and the true spirit of martial arts.
Beyond teaching, Sensei Gilbert actively participates in seminars, continually enhancing his knowledge and sharing expertise with the martial arts community. As a founding member of the American Self-defense Federation, he plays a pivotal role in preserving and promoting traditional martial arts practices.
Darren's martial arts journey began in high school, training in Uechi-ryu Karate, and expanded through experiences in Tae Kwon Do while stationed in South Korea with the U.S. Army. His commitment to Isshin-ryu Karate was solidified under the mentorship of the late Sensei Sherman Harrill. He also enriches his martial arts repertoire with traditional Okinawan Kobudo and Largo Mano Escrima, focusing on classical weapons and stick fighting techniques.
