Established in 1949 by Roman Catholic monks from the Gethsemani monastery in Kentucky, Mepkin Abbey is situated on the historic Mepkin Plantation along the Cooper River. The monks at Mepkin Abbey follow The Rule of St. Benedict, dedicating their lives to prayer, spiritual study, work, and hospitality. As members of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, also known as Trappist, they sustain themselves through manual labor and provide for the needs of the less fortunate.

Mepkin Abbey Botanical Garden is a serene park located at 098 Mepkin Abbey Road in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, United States. The institution offers Church Tours every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 11:30 a.m. for a cost of $5 per adult, with children admitted for free. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead at 843-761-8509 to confirm tour schedules. The Abbey also holds daily prayer services including Vigils at 4:00 AM, Mass with Lauds at 7:00 AM, Mid-Day Prayer at 12:00 PM, Vespers at 6:00 PM, and Compline at 7:30 PM. On Sundays, the schedule is slightly adjusted with Mass at 10:00 AM and Vespers at 5:00 PM.
