COKER SPRING
Coker Spring, located on Coker Springs Road Southwest in Aiken, South Carolina, is a historic site that has been providing fresh drinking water since prehistoric times. The spring served as a vital water source for English settlers in the area and later became the main water supply for the city of Aiken when it was incorporated in 1835. The spring house, built in the early 1800s with a Greek-style facade added in the 1850s, stands as a reminder of its importance in the region's history. Coker Spring was a popular stop on the stagecoach route from Abbeville to Charleston and has changed hands several times throughout its history. The property was eventually deeded to Aiken with the stipulation that it be freely accessible to the public for drinking water and other uses. Today, the spring is a fresh water source and a significant archaeological site that sheds light on the area's past.
