URI Watershed Watch
URI Watershed Watch is an institution located at 1 Greenhouse Road in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, United States. They provide valuable information on the water quality of surface water resources throughout Rhode Island. In 2024, their team of volunteers will be monitoring nearly 250 locations in Rhode Island and nearby states such as Connecticut, Massachusetts, and even Fisher Island, New York. With warmer weather bringing more Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), URI Watershed Watch is dedicated to educating the community on how to identify and prevent these blooms locally. They are also actively recruiting new volunteers to join their team of over 400 trained individuals for the 2024 monitoring season. URI Watershed Watch has been instrumental in helping the community map out invasive species such as Hydrilla, which was recently reported in Rhode Island for the first time. They have also been featured in the media, with the Boston TV program Chronicle showcasing the Narrow River in a recent episode. Additionally, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has posted updated maps of sites with aquatic invasive plants and Asian clams, with URI Watershed Watch playing a vital role in monitoring and managing these invasive species.
