Seal House

Built in 1938 by the Works Progress Administration, this stone structure was originally used as a shelter for the Zoo's sea lions. It is one of the few remaining buildings from the era that still stands outside of the current Zoo grounds. Monkey Island

The park itself has a rich history dating back nearly 250 years, with many lost entities that have either ceased to exist or have been transformed over time. One of the lost entities of the park includes rustic structures that provided shaded picnic areas and shelter from the rain. The foundation of one of the cottages can still be seen across from the Museum of Natural History. Another lost entity was the floral American Flag, which used hills and valleys to achieve a unique “waving effect” before being replaced by the Dalrymple Boathouse in 1896.
