Lower Elk Creek Nature Reserve is a vital contributor to the recreational and conservation values cherished by the Lake Erie Region. Spanning approximately 92 acres, the reserve is home to extensive wetlands and plays a crucial role in maintaining a contiguous forested buffer along Elk Creek. This area is a haven for wildlife, providing essential habitats for species such as beavers and bald eagles. Situated within an exceptional value greenway, the reserve is a true gem for nature enthusiasts.
Conservation Projects:
The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) is spearheading a significant project to stabilize the stream bank of Elk Creek within the reserve. This initiative aims to enhance habitats for fish, birds, and other species. WPC is actively raising funds to advance this project and seeks additional support from the community and nature lovers.
Features:
- Extensive Frontage: The reserve boasts extensive frontage on Elk Creek and its tributaries, floodplain forests, and various wetland types.
- Hiking Trails: From the parking area, visitors can access the Lower Elk Creek hiking trail. This trail leads downslope, crosses two small streams, and runs along a forested ridge before descending to the creek.
- Bird Watching: Lower Elk Creek Nature Reserve is recognized as an eBird hotspot, making it a premier location for birding. Bird watchers can spot a variety of Neotropical migrant songbirds during spring and fall migrations, including vireos, warblers, thrushes, and sparrows.
- Fishing: Elk Creek is an approved trout water destination and is particularly popular for steelhead fishing. This fishing access is partially funded by anglers who purchase Lake Erie Permits.
- Wildflowers: In spring, the reserve is adorned with wildflowers such as marsh marigold, golden ragwort, mayapple, blue violet, yellow trout lily, spotted geranium, foamflower, jack-in-the-pulpit, and red trillium.

Reviews
"Great fishing and birding."
"Nice section of elk and easy to access"
"Great place to kayak."
"Great little hike down to the tubes. I like to start here and hike to girard borough park using the creek as my path, until elk park road then there is a nice path that run along the creek to the park. When you get to the tubes it's hard to find the connecting path but if you look for it you will find it. Good hiking to you all."
"Nice short trail to Elk Creek. Good Steelhead fishing in the fall. Plenty of natural plants and birds."
