Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge
β OpenThree Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, located in Tillamook, Oregon, is a park and tourist attraction that consists of a series of islands just offshore from the town of Oceanside. Closed year-round to the public to protect the sensitive nesting habitat for seabirds and marine mammals, visitors can still enjoy views of the refuge from the beach in Oceanside or from Cape Meares. Established in 1907 as the first National Wildlife Refuge west of the Mississippi River, it is now home to the largest and most diverse seabird colony in Oregon and serves as an important breeding site for Steller sea lions. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works to conserve and monitor plants and wildlife, manage and restore habitat, and provide outdoor recreation for the public at over 550 National Wildlife Refuges nationwide. Three Arch Rocks NWR historically housed over 200,000 Common murres and is currently a breeding ground for Steller Sea Lions. Visitors may also spot the distinctive Black Oystercatcher and majestic Bald Eagle in the area. Oregon Coastal Refuge staff utilize various habitat management techniques to maintain and enhance plant and wildlife values in the refuge. Committed to conserving, protecting, and enhancing fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats, the refuge system relies on concerned citizens to help preserve America's natural resources.
